This almost illusory title was made up just before "The song is You"-festival concert in Warzawa in November 2008; during that concert day I had been secretly posing and was sneaking among the pigeons of one big square, which actually was a big roundabout, trying to get their attention, but in vain...only one elderly woman got their attention, obviously since she was feeding them with polish bread, or maybe it wasnt only the bread...or that it was polish...maybe it was her whole life experience which made her release the small pieces of bread with exactly that right timing, who knows?

Landing platforms, truss, tracks, steps, handrail, ... the complexity of this mechanism is a real opportunity for any listener. Even though the original components (wood...) are progressively replaced with modern ones, like the elevator this machinery still sounds like a heroic invention from the Industrial Revolution (second half of the XIX th century). And while the technology evolves, the idea remains the same.
When I first started listening to these systems, 10 years ago, I paid attention to the concept: mechanical transport of one's body through the city. Opposite to the compound like elevator (a closed space), escalators provide you with open space. Moving in one direction, like traveling through a movie (a cinematic vision), your body is carried slowly into a specific city location. For this short time (from few seconds to several minutes) you are completely devoted "to slide" through the city. Suddenly, your body moves from the static ground... you escalate.

tarab: utility (2009)

Compiled from a series of recordings collected on wanderings through the northern suburbs of Melbourne. The city heard through holes in the ground. Various sized utility holes. Rather than generating a sound of their own, most of the holes I came across act as a trap or filter for the sounds of the city. Their locations, what time I found them and their particular sound qualities dictated what sounds I heard, or in many cases did not hear.

From the road I can hear the leaves and branches of the tree clattering wildly on the hillock. The enormous scale of this sound seems amiss though, as I observe the relatively calm motion of the treetop. Yet, it is a windy afternoon, and I do have to pull my jacket closed and duck my head as I cross the road and climb the soggy green slope.

Once beneath the tree, almost completely sealed off from daylight, I realize it is not the wind that drums inside the canopy. Rather, downward, through a jag in a heap of roots I see that a buried stream rushes through the guts of the hillock, thundering across rock towards the water that passes beneath the bridge.

The smell of dung in the pastures at my back, I step down into the dune.
The shadows of the tall, sharp grasses beat across the sand.
The surf of this small bay is remarkably sonorous, especially when it draws back from the gray lip of sand. I sit for a while, watching the unimpressive waves coming in from the sea. Still, the sound overwhelms this corner of sky and I feel a throb intermittently in my sternum. Shortly, flies swarm at my ankles and so I get up and head down to the waterline, finding not sand but a litter of gray and white stones. As the next wave breaks and recedes, I step forward into the water and feel that the stones like eggs roll and tumble upon the bottom.
So this is the loud mouth of such a modest landscape!

Below the weir, the rocks are stacked as if with a purpose. If I were to move one, subtly, how might this change the shape of the water flowing down? Which vowel might ring out from the changing pockets of air?

Music for bassoon multiphonics and forced air.

Adam Sonderberg works with concrète-based forms utilizing the computer as a discreet processing and assembly tool. Sonderberg is also Co-director of the Dropp Ensemble and 1/3 of Haptic.

Katherine Young writes electroacoustic music, often using flexible forms and expressive, timbre-focused notations. As a bassoonist, Young improvises, performs new chamber music, and plays with rock bands.

In addition to their work as a duo and in various ad-hoc groupings, Sonderberg and Young previously worked together in the trio Civil War.

David Dunn | Western Harvester Ants (Pogonomyrmex Occidentalis)

Two forms of sound making have been well documented in ants:drumming against substratum and stridulation using specialised organs adapted for this purpose. The resultant sounds appear to serve four particular functions: alarm, recruitment, termination of mating by females, and modulation of other communication (usually chemical) and forms of behaviour. Ants stridulate with the hindmost body section, the gaster, which sports a ridged patch that rubs against a neighbouring file-like edge. When the gaster is raised and lowered, it produces a stridulatory chirp from the scraping action.

Gino Robair - Norwich Fragments. Feedback-controlled eBow snare drum

The drum head and metal snare are responding to the standing waves created by feedback using an AKG 414 microphone (pointed at the drum) through stereo PA speakers. High- and low-shelving and mid-band parametric filters on a Mackie mixer are used to tune the standing waves, some of which are inaudible on their own, but can be perceived by how the eBow snare reacts.
